Putting in work

It all comes down to putting in the work. Everyone wants the next new diet, training program or supplement that is going to promise him or her those elusive goals that they are after. Whether it’s the bikini body, super human strength or those washboard abs, it makes no difference – just do the work.

Getting technical and employing the latest methods all still have one fundamental principle… that is application i.e. doing the work.work

“Don’t think. Act. We can always revise and revisit once we’ve acted. But we can accomplish nothing until we act.” Steven Pressfield

Commonly in the health and fitness industry, new books, programs and websites claim that their revolutionary product is unique and the answer you have been looking for, however more often than not the idea or principles have been taken from someone else and repackaged as their own.

When it comes down to finding the best program or whatever answer you’re looking for, it’s how effective someone can market their idea, communicate, get you to buy and deliver on the claims and results.

Getting sucked into marketing and trends can set you heading in the wrong direction without a definitive resource that can take you closer toward the goals you’re after.

It’s imperative when looking for a trainer or program, not just to look at the individual, rather, you should look at their results from clients of a similar background to you. If it’s not relatable and examples of previous success aren’t relevant to you, then just because the trainer selling the program is in shape, workdoesn’t mean they can necessarily get you there as well.

It makes me laugh when people think they can simply buy results in the gym or on the sporting field. Yes, money can buy you the best resources for coaching, equipment, strategies and even fast track things… But it all comes back to putting in the work!

We have all seen those middle-aged corporate men that have invested tens of thousands of dollars in the latest golf club technology and not to mention the latest golf fashion, holding in all their corporate lunches. I don’t have anything against these guys because I’ll encourage anyone who is attempting to improve their health and be more active, but I feel in general, people tend to have a disproportionate focus on the wrong area.

Investing money won’t always make you follow through with the practice required to get better or to improve. And that is where the majority of all results are hiding! A golfer with a 20-year old set of clubs who has practiced for decades, will always shoot a better score than a golfer with the latest and greatest golfing equipment that money can buy, who has only been playing for a couple of years. Work will always outplay resources!

Establishing the mental approach must be the first port of call when attempting an exercise or lifestyle change. Don’t get swept up in the details of how this new science or strategy is going to change your life and results!

Make your priorities in the following order:

  1. What do you want to achieve?
  2. Why do you want to achieve it? And then,
  3. How will work itself out naturally.

The how has no emotional gravitas and won’t get you to put in the work on those mornings you want to stay in bed.

In summary, any great result requires the application of work!

“Just remember, you can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets. ”Arnold Schwarzenegger

Do the work - Steven PressfeildP.s. One of my favourite books on this topic is “Do the work” by Steven Pressfield. It’s a MUST read for everyone. I read it once
a quarter when resistance and procrastination starts to creep in.
